Fire on board an Oil Tanker in Labuan (East Malaysia) 26-Jul-2012

Kota Kinabalu (Labuan):  An explosion on board the Malaysian International Shipping corporation  owned Bunga Alpina 3 early Thursday has claimed one crewman dead and four others missing.

The Fire broke out alongside the Petronas Methanol terminal in Labuan at about 3am

Crewman Shahril Azmi Baharuddin, 28 was confirmed dead by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency as his body was found floating in the sea at about 10am, in a statement given by MMEA officer Awil Kamsari.

Out of the 29 crew members comprising of  Malaysians and Filipinos, twenty four were brought safely back to shore.

Amongst the injured were a staff of Petronas, a member of public and a crew member, all sustained minor burn injuries as related by MMEA coordinating officer Lt Comm Azmi Mohd Dahan

A series of explosions had forced firemen who had rushed to the scene to withdraw.

Media relations manager Ahmad Faiz A. Raham from Petronas Chemical Group Berhad confirmed that the fire occurred at the Petronas Chemical Methanol Sdn Bhd terminal. All efforts are taken to ensure the safety of all personnel involved.

Investigation are being carried out to cause of the fire. Currently all ASB activities has been temporarily halted till further notice.
